Enchantment and Modernity
This volume is part of the intellectual aurobiography of Alan Macfarlane. It explores the three-fold trajectory of his emotional and spiritual life from 1941 to the present. Starting with an enchanted childhood in India, Dorset and his first school at Oxford, the second part consisted of leaming to be a rational adult in the modern world. At his second school in Yorkshire and Oxford University, what he went through seemed to fulfil Max Weber's description of being imprisoned in an iron cage, or Wordsworth's description of disenchantment in 'The Prelude' Then Alan went to Nepal, Japan and China and discovered that they are still enchanted in many ways. This led him to come back to his own British world and to find how much it is still enchanted through, play, arts and much else.
Please note that this book is only available in paperback binding.
