Cambridge Xu Zhimo Poetry & Arts Festival
Contemporary Poetry Reading
No.28

将紫禁城化作了一派梦幻般的景象;
为金色大厅披上了一件节日的盛装;
有人形容你是预兆丰年的幸运使者;
成为小朋友和滑雪者们的挚爱;
和鲜艳夺目、震慑疫魔的红围巾;
你在耳畔,你在心间;
抒发着幸福祥和的芬芳;
化作一片小小的你;
参与你们的对话;
Welcoming the New Year with Snowflakes
by Lei Fengyun
Recited by Professor Alan Macfarlane
The day before yesterday, fluttering snow of good omen fell in Beijing,
Transformed the Forbidden City into a magical scene;
The winter snow in Vienna,
Also crossed the mountains and the blue Dunabe,
Clothed the golden hall in a magnificent festive costume;
O, snowflakes, my dear friends,
Where are you from?
You are so pure and romantic, crystal clear,
You dressed up my hometown and gave it glamour.
Where are you going?
You dance with elegance, your skilful hands twist and turn.
You put a silver outfit on his hometown to give it allure.
Snowflakes, do you have a name?
Some praise you as a beautiful fairy tale in winter,
Some compare you to the sweet spirit of the north,
Some say you are like the pear blossom
On a thousand trees in spring,
Some say you are a messenger of good luck
Auguring a prosperous year;
You visit the human world year after year,
You become the true love of children and ice-skaters;
Children speak you with joy,
You are the snowmen’s smiling faces, fat tummies and long noses,
They bring a landlord hat to protect you from freezing wind and cold
And a bright red scarf, to scare plague devils away;
The happy winter swimmers steer their skis and sleighs,
Running through the sea of forests and the fields of snow,
Spreading the happy laughter and chatter through the valley.
The snow fell on the Yan Mountain, the Great Wall
The snow fell on the green pine trees and winter plum blossom,
The snow fell in the Vienna forests
The snow fell on the Palaces of Schönbrunn and Hofburg,
You speak your secret language,
Reciting the poem of the Tang Dynasty poet GAO Cen,
‘Where is the plum blossom falling?
It covers the Guan Mountain after the night winds’,
Singing with the voice of nature,
Interpreting the emotion of the nation of music’s melodious golden song,
‘Edelweiss, edelweiss, every morning you greet me’,
You set before the windows of the libraries, the schools and the museums,
Admiring the rich scientific theory of European and Asian classics,
Appreciating the appeal of the poetic sentiment and picturesque scenes of East and West,
Perhaps also perceiving some
Mysteries of the brave creativity and lasting life of the human race.
O, dear snowflakes, my dear friends,
You walk and run tirelessly through the chilly wind,
You are in the wild places, you are atop the mountains,
You are before our eyes, you are in the middle of our hearts;
You are on the Qin Ridge, the Yellow River, the Tai Mountain and the South Mountain,
You are in the Alps and in Innsbruck
You are on Mount Everest and the ice of the North Pole,
You are on the ‘Silk Road’ and the ‘Old ways of Tea and Horses’.
You work in unison, move forward hand in hand,
Singing songs of festive blessings,
Giving off the fragrance of happiness and tranquillity;
You create the sweet spring to irrigate the mountain ranges,
You leave your nutrients to fertilise the wild fields.
O, snowflakes, my dear friends,
I would like to don your hexagonal wings,
To become a small piece of you;
To follow your dream,
To look for your hometown,
To join your chorus,
To take part in your conversation;
I will sing loudly with you all along, march forward bravely,
To decorate your hometown, my hometown, their hometowns,
To make them more beautiful, harmonious, prosperous and peaceful,
Beijing, Shanghai, Chongli, the Changbai Mountains,
Vienna, Salzburg, St Anton, Hallstatt,
The winter polar, the far ends of the world, the human paradise.
The home of clouds, the dreamland,, the brighter future …
